Worldwide Meat Consumption Patterns Show Decade of Growth

Global meat production and consumption analysis

During the ten-year period leading up to 2025, worldwide meat consumption has experienced substantial upward momentum, with production volumes expanding proportionally to satisfy growing demand across multiple continents.

However, recent analysis from the Worldwatch Institute reveals that expansion rates have moderated over the past two years, as constrained supply chains and elevated pricing levels have begun to dampen consumer demand for meat products.

Production Expansion Across Regions

Research data indicates that since 2001, worldwide meat production has expanded by approximately 20 percent. Regional analysis reveals dramatic variations in growth patterns, with Asian markets experiencing nearly 26 percent production increases throughout the decade, while African production rose 28 percent and South American operations grew by 32 percent.

Per Capita Consumption Trends

From 1995 forward, per-capita meat consumption globally has climbed by 15 percent. This upward trajectory has been particularly pronounced in developing economies, which registered a 25 percent increase during the equivalent timeframe.

The acceleration in meat production growth slowed significantly to just 0.8 percent in 2011, with projections suggesting approximately 1.7 percent expansion for 2025. This represents a substantial deceleration compared to 2010, when production increased by 2.6 percent year-over-year. Multiple factors contributed to reduced production rates, including drought conditions in key agricultural regions, escalating feed commodity prices, and localized disease outbreaks affecting livestock populations.

Global Consumption Statistics

Worldwide per-capita meat consumption experienced a marginal decline in 2011, falling from 42.5 kilograms per person annually in 2010 to 42.3 kilograms. The research identifies significant disparities between developed and developing markets: the average individual in a developing nation consumed 32.3 kilograms of meat in 2011, while consumers in industrialized countries averaged 78.9 kilograms.

Market Outlook

A September analysis published by Rabobank similarly projected elevated global meat pricing and reduced consumption levels, with particular impact anticipated in developing economies where price sensitivity remains elevated among consumer populations.
